GCR500-MS Product Sheet The desktop multiapplication standalone reader The Gemplus card reader GCR500-MS (Multi-SAMs) is the entry-level model in the multiapplication terminal range. Based on GemCore Technology, the electronic kernel and firmware of all Gemplus readers, the GCR500-MS can manage several different applications and accepts every kind of memory or microprocessor card. The GCR500-MS can handle several SAM (Security Access Module) connectors, which ensure security and protection for applications, separately one from another. The result: it is the ideal reader for managing several applications, from payment transactions to electronic purses to loyalty programs, together with its peripheral printer and modem, the GCR500-MS enables implementation of entirely autonomous solutions. Integrated functions A stand-alone, single-slot reader, the GCR500-MS has a compact display and keyboard which makes it easy to communicate with cardholders (display of specific messages, input of amounts and secret codes, etc.) The GCR500-MS also operates as a peripheral to a PC, thanks to RS232 connectivity. In the same way, the reader connects to other external peripherals (modems and printers). Gemplus offers a choice of its own products, such as the modem Mod500, specially designed for the GCR500-MS. This provides the means to have an integrated solution, taking up little space on a desktop or at a cashier's workstation. Intended to meet the requirements of, among other things, electronic-purse applications, the modem permits the transfer of transaction ledgers to a central server which processes them. Thanks to the printer DX58, it is also possible to have a written receipt, essential for payment transactions. Furthermore, Gemplus offers a development kit to allow software engineers to build their own applications, which can then be downloaded to the reader.
