The first smart card reader with full type II PC Card compatibility.

The GPR400 was developed by Gemplus to incorporate smart cards into all information systems equipped with a PC Card slot. This card reader a high-performance, compact and lightweight device.

It can handle a wide range of functions for various applications such as computer security, network security, healthcare, banking and telecommunications

Applications

Access control for local-area or wide-area networks (e.g., Internet). The GPR400 offers an ideal interface between a portable computer and a smart card, to control access to databases, corporate computer networks or it can be used as a key for payment systems on the information highways.

User identification : The GPR400 identifies the computer user when he inserts his smart card, and his exact software configuration is reconstituted.

Protection against unauthorized software copying : With GPR400 and smart card access key, the use of a software package can be limited to a single person.

Operational,Technical and Physical Characteristics

PC Card Interface	The GPR400 can be connected to any device equipped with a Type II PC Card slot and version 2.1 PC Card interface software (Card Services). After inserting it into the PC Card slot and running the supplied set-up software, the GPR400 is immediately ready for use in any PC thanks to its I/O design. The user can then communicate and exchange data with smart cards using this portable computer environment.
Compatibility	Thanks to the range of loadable drivers, GPR400 supports most memory and microprocessor cards currently on the market and its general-purpose architecture means that even embossed cards can be used.
Ease of use	With its "Plug & Play" installation, the GPR400 is immediately ready for use. It is supplied with a Microsoft® Windows® software set-up routine ( compatible with Microsoft® Windows95® ).
Power Consumption	idle : 4 mA (average value) in operation : 12 mA (average value) power down mode: 150 µA
Compatibility	All cards that meet ISO 7816-1, -2, -3 and 7811 standards (embossed card), with T=0 and T=1 protocols. Optional drivers are also available for other protocols (T=14, GPM, GFM, etc).
Handy	When carrying your portable PC, you can leave the GPR400 plugged into the PC Card slot.
Lightweight	less than 20g.
Compact	85 x 54 x 5 mm (3.4 x 2.16 x 0.2 inches), PC Card Type II card format.

Options

Flash Memory: 128 KB Flash memory allowing additional data (blacklist, etc.) or program files (reader personalization routines...) to be incorporated.

Specific Card Drivers: a variety of card drivers are available (T=14, GPM, GFM, etc.).

Evaluation Kit: this kit gives you the opportunity to discover all the different features of the GPR400 described in this document.

Development Kit: this kit includes the tools needed to develop you own specific application around the GPR400.
