Why engage a forensic accountant
Providing expert accounting assistance is not simply a
matter of adding up the numbers. First, the numbers may not be easy to find or are not in
perfect order. Some information will be available internally, some only externally. Some
information will require reworking to be useful and other information may not be available
at all. Some parties may relate information about what happened, which may not bear any
resemblance to reality.
The role of the forensic and investigative accountant is
to examine all available information and evaluate probable and possible explanations. He
or she must then create a file of documents supported by appropriate analysis to explain
the most probable business reality. In short, the expert must be an experienced and
successful investigator, in addition to being knowledgeable in the accounting world.
The advantages of using an experienced forensic team are
simply that it helps to use people who have seen the problems before. Professional
scepticism and experienced investigative skills are essential to recognise the breadth of
problems to which corporates are exposed. The resolution of a dispute or the solving of a
problem requires more than numbers - it requires the appropriate numbers. We do not offer
purely accounting solutions; we work as part of an overall team in looking for integrated
solutions to settling a client's problems.
As is evident from their cirriculum vitae and
qualifications, our forensic team is multi-disciplinary and has a wide range of experience
in the forensic and investigative field.
Our expertise may be employed in forensic accounting work
in the following areas:
- investigations, both criminal and civil;
- preparation and review of evidence;
- preparation of expert reports;
- affidavits and proof of evidence;
- giving oral evidence in court;
- expert determination, arbitration, mediation or
alternative dispute resolution;
- insolvency support investigation; and
- fraud prevention and awareness strategies.
Every forensic accounting engagement is entered into on
the assumption that the outcome of the engagement may be a court case, criminal, civil, or
both, or a disciplinary hearing. It is for this reason that the greatest care is
exercised. |
