As the leading international airline in Africa, South African Airways strives to offer a warm, safe, African experience for all its passengers. It is the mission of the airline to fly the spirit of the South African nation to the world. In keeping with its mission, South African Airways introduced a colourful new corporate identity and aircraft livery in 1997, which clearly proclaims that spirit. Based on the colours of the South African flag, the new corporate identity is a design which evokes the majesty of our two oceans, the richness of our land and the radiant beauty of our sunsets. Safety, reliability, care and comfort are the attributes which South African Airways has espoused for more than six decades of existence, dating back to its foundation in 1934. To those attributes have now been added inspiration, spirit and pride. It is an airline which continues to aspire towards the high standards attained in the past, but which has now also become one with which the entire nation can identify. In a history spanning over 60 years, South African Airways has made many notable contributions towards the development of civil aviation, not only on the African continent but around the world. It has opened up the globe to South Africans and linked South Africa with the major cities of the world, achieving an impressive series of aviation 'firsts'; in the process. Some of these are mentioned in this publication. Such is the reputation of its flight-training programme that its pilots and flight attendants are sought after by airlines around the world, resulting in South African Airways becoming renowned for its technical expertise and its warm and caring staff. South African Airways will continue to play its part in the development of civil aviation, confident of upholding the great traditions of the past and rightly taking its place among the truly outstanding international carriers, with the full support of the entire populace of our great land.
