On-board Services

On-board services is responsible for the selection and training of flight attendants (including some for other airlines), and for maintaining high quality in-flight services on board domestic and international aircraft.

Aside from providing friendly and professional service at all times, On-board Services is responsible for:

  • Duty-free sales on African and international flights.
  • Ensuring that the cuisine is of the highest standard.
  • Co-ordinating the selection of wines served on board.

Information Services

This division controls all the computers, facilities and assets necessary for the smooth running of:

  • data systems
  • reservations
  • personnel
  • management information systems
  • and rationalisation of the network, by providing back-up communication links.

Modifications and other improvements have been made to the SAACARE, SAAFARI, MEMIS and SATAMARS systems, enabling end-users optimum utilisation of these services. Larger mainframes have also been installed and existing mainframes upgraded, to provide sections with information technology of the highest order.

Aircraft Fuel Management

This department aims to achieve the highest international standard of excellence and professionalism in the provision of aviation petroleum products to South African Airways. It is also responsible for the purchase of all fuel; and for keeping an eagle eye on all matters relating to jet fuel and the oil industry.

Human Resources

This vital component ensures that an effective service is provided to meet the various needs of the airline's employees both countrywide and worldwide. The Commercial and Corporate Training sections maintain a well qualified and motivated workforce for the airline.

Medical Services

Staffed by highly qualified medical personnel, Medical Services has a fully equipped and professional medical section at Johannesburg International Airport.

Not only does this section assist passengers, it also offers a continuous service to employees. Regular medical check-ups are performed to ensure that all flying personnel are physically fit and healthy. Medical examinations of flight attendants are conducted, staff inoculated against infectious diseases and various special information programmes are initiated.

Security

The safety of passengers is of utmost importance. In liaison with airport, government and police authorities worldwide, this department ensures that all South African Airways establishments are secure. And that passengers, cargo, including valuable cargo, and mail are transported safely and securely.
