So we set out to make the VW Bus a benchmark for safety. At the
front of the Bus, deformation zones absorb the impact of a frontal
collision. Beneath the Bus, a yoke frame does the same. And around
the sides, a rigid safety cell provides secure, cage-like protection
from side, front, rear and top impacts. Inside, the steering wheel
disengages on impact. Front inertia-reel seatbelts guarantee a
vice-like grip, SABS tested seat mounting points ensure stable
seating, and anti-burst locks do their bit to keep you secure.
Dual circuit, front/rear split brakes stop the Bus straight and
sharp, even if one circuit is damaged. And negative roll radius
suspension keeps you on line even if braking hard with two wheels
on tar and two on dirt. And how effective are all these features
when it comes to the crunch? Ask the SABS. When they crash-tested
the Bus, it not only passed but exceeded all their passenger vehicle
